The things that stand out for me in this passage are humility, having a servant heart and the importance of having good relationship with others. In Jesus’ time, feet were very dirty because they didn’t wear proper shoes, but just open sandals that were worn throughout the day, for everything they did. It was unheard of for Masters to be washing a servant’s feet. We live in a world where respect, status and titles matter. The encouragement for me here is that there’s no job that’s beneath us. The very act of Jesus washing Peter’s feet also shows that Jesus himself is trying to get closer in relationship with Peter. We need to remind ourselves that although we strive for success in everything that we do, we need to keep ourselves grounded through the relationships that we have with everyone around us.
