I’ve always loved the honesty and intensity of this passage in portraying the humanity of Jesus. I am also struck by the insight it offers into the disciples’ humanity. How on earth did they fall asleep at such a critical juncture? Luke tells us with stunning simplicity that they were ‘sleeping from sorrow’. In our darkest hours, crushing despair and anxiety often compel us to look inwards at our own misery, rather than upwards to God. The disciples must have been filled with so many emotions - sadness at the prospect of losing their Lord, terror about their fate and disappointment that the coming of the kingdom was not as they had envisioned. What a relief to know that these were the same men that Jesus chose and loved, who would go on post-resurrection to spread the gospel throughout the world and even die for their faith!
